In early 1861, two men traveled east to become American presidents – Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America and Abraham Lincoln of the United States of America. I can't imagine what each man was thinking would await them. They were both being thrown into the fire of crisis.
With secessionist fever spreading across the country, there were plots and conspiracies that put political and military leaders on high alert. Would the presidents-elect even make it to their respective capitals alive? Would their governments be ready to function amidst all the change and unrest?
While threats of violence were whispered around Baltimore and Washington, there were still many Americans, both northern and southern, doing everything they could to avert conflict between the Union and the seceded states.
Would there be an eleventh-hour proposal for peace from the great Peace Conference meeting in the shadow of the Capitol? Would a constitutional amendment settle the matter of slavery once and for all? And would there be peaceful negotiations around the handling of the Federal strongpoint and garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor?
